What is Allegra?
Allegra is an antihistamine drug licensed to treat indoor and outdoor allergies, particularly seasonal ones. It is available as pills for oral administration with various strengths of Fexofenadine hydrochloride as active ingredient. The agent works by blocking histamine receptors, helping to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching of nose and throat as well as red, watery or itching eyes. It is referred to the second generation antihistamine thanks to its less sedative properties.

When is Allegra indicated?
Allegra is indicated for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in adults and children over 2 years of age. It is also prescribed for treating chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) in adults and children as old as 6 months. Although it is not a cure for these conditions, the drug helps to relieve and prevent aggravation of symptoms associated with those conditions, providing steady relief of runny nose, repeated sneezing, itchy eyes ,general weakness and manifestations of urticaria.

How to take Allegra?
Allegra is intended for oral administration, typically once daily for adults and once or twice daily for children. The recommended dosage for hay fever and chronic hives in adults and children over 12 is 180 mg q24h or 60 mg q12h. Pediatric patients aged 6-11 are given 30 mg q12h. Patients with decreased kidney function require lower doses – 60 mg q24h for adults and 30 mg q24h for children correspondingly. Tablets should be taken with water, without regard to meals. Children as young as 6 months old should be given oral suspension.

When is Allegra contraindicated?
Allegra is contraindicated to patients with known allergy to Fexofenadine or any inactive ingredients of the drug. Rare hypersensitivity reactions with manifestations of dyspnea, chest tightness, angioedema, flushing and systemic anaphylaxis have been reported. Fruit juice can significantly decrease the drug absorption; therefore it should be taken with water.

What are Allegra side effects?
Allegra rarely provokes side effects, though, as the case may be, it may cause headache, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness or fatigue, coughing, back pain, respiratory infection, otitis media and pinpoint pupils. Serious side effects include anxiety, sleep problems, unexplained rash, swelling and menstrual cramps.
