What is Arimidex?
Arimidex is a drug of the non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors (NSAI) class. It is an anticancer medication specifically designed for the treatment of certain breast cancer types in women who have gone through menopause. It comes in tablet form with 1 mg of Anastrozole as active ingredient. The agent works by reducing estrogen hormone levels to help shrink tumors and slow down their growth.
When is Arimidex indicated?
Arimidex is indicated for adjuvant hormonal therapy of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and cancer that hasn’t responded to Tamoxifen treatment. It is also administered to prevent the cancer from returning. The drug is approved for use only in postmenopausal women. Since most tumors grow with the help of estrogens and in postmenopausal women most of the body estrogen is produced by aromatase enzymes, the drug decreases the estrogen amount by blocking these enzymes. Therefore it is ineffective in fertile and premenopausal women as in them estrogens are produced by ovaries.
How to take Arimidex?
Arimidex typical dosing schedule is one 1 mg pill once daily, without regard to food. The optimal duration of therapy is not known and should be decided by the prescribing physician. In clinical trials the drug was administered for 5 years or until the tumor progression. For the drug to work properly it must be taken as prescribed. Pills should be received regularly, at one and the same time each day to maintain even blood levels.
When is Arimidex contraindicated?
Arimidex is contraindicated to premenopausal, nursing, pregnant and women who may become pregnant. The drug shouldn’t be used in patients who have shown a hypersensitivity reaction to any of the tableting excipients. It shouldn’t be administered together with Tamoxifen or other estrogen-containing treatments. The drug is not approved for use in men and children.
What are Arimidex side effects?
Arimidex can cause hot flashes, mood changes, weakness, joint symptoms, back pain, headache, hypertension, insomnia, depression, nausea, gastrointestinal disorders, sore throat, rash, limbs swelling, bone pain, osteoporosis and fractures. However these side effects are usually minor and can be easily treated. Serious effects that must be immediately reported to the prescribing physician are difficulty breathing and unexplained vaginal bleeding.
