What is Avodart?
Avodart (Dutasteride) is a drug commonly used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), otherwise known as an enlarged prostate. It is a monograph that is administered orally, usually in the form of 0.5mg capsules. Avodart is a representative of a class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. These drugs reduce the levels of alpha reductase in the body, which is an enzyme involved with the conversion of testosterone, progesterone, cortisol, aldosterone, etc. These are all very important male hormones, and inhibitors that affect them treat specific “male” issues like male pattern baldness, prostate cancer, prostatic hyperplasia, and even hormone replacement therapy for transgender patients.

What are the indications for using Avodart?
Avodart is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. This is essentially a condition where the prostate of a man is enlarged beyond what is healthy and standard. During hyperplasia of stromal and epithelial cells, large nodules form in periurethral part of the prostate, and this can compress and obstruct the urethral canal. This obstruction in turn may cause difficulty urinating, urinary tract infections, insomnia, urinary retention and frequent urination. This is often a progressive disease whose symptoms are quite evident, so it should not be left untreated under any circumstances. The biggest contributor to the appearance of BPH is aging, but other lifestyle factors such as obesity and diet can also be a major influence on the appearance of the condition.

What is the dosage of Avodart?
Avodart comes in the form of 0.5mg capsules. These should be stored in a dry place at room temperature and administered once a day in doses of 0.5mg. It can be taken with or without food but must never be chewed.

What are the contraindications for using Avodart?
Firstly, it’s important to note that since this is a drug used for treating male health issues, it is totally incompatible for consumption by women. It is also contraindicated for use by children and anyone who is allergic to it or its active ingredients. Studies have shown that Avodart has moderate interactions with 74 drugs, including Adalat, Amiodarone, Biaxin, Calan, Cypro, Ketek, etc. For a more complete list, along with other recommendations pertaining to your specific health needs, it’s best to consult a doctor.

What are the adverse effects of Avodart?
Clinical trials have established several possible side effects: decreased libido, impotence, ejaculation disorders, dizziness, rash, depression, and testicular pain.
