What is Cefixime?
Cefixime is an antibiotic drug applied to treat different types of bacterial infections. The drug was developed by Lederle Laboratories as a third generation cephalosporin in the 1990’s. It was approved by the FDA in April 1998 and became very successful, even landing on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines. Cefixime is an antibiotic drug and has a mechanism of action similar to other antibiotics. This means that it kills bacteria by stopping their synthesis. This is done by binding to proteins necessary for the growth of bacteria. While most antibiotics are limited in the type of bacteria they can target, Cefixime has a broad range of bacterial targets.

What are the indications for using Cefixime?
Cefixime is used to treat a number of infections. The first among them is otitis. This ear infection causes swelling, pain, vertigo, and sometimes hearing loss. Another infection that Cefixime treats is sinusitis. Sinusitis affects the breathing passages of the body known as sinuses, and can lead to stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, fever, and several other symptoms. Many people suffer from the sexually transmitted infection known as gonorrhea, and Cefixime can be used to treat it. The same drug can be applied to treat pharyngitis and tonsillitis, two very common throat infections. Other typical treatments include bronchitis, typhoid fever, and pneumonia.

What is the dosage of Cefixime?
Cefixime is supplied as tablets, which should be swallowed with a gulp of water. The standard dose for most infections is 400 mg. Usually, treatment will last up to ten days, but certain cases will require weeks of treatment. Keep in mind that the right dose should be determined by a medical professional, because every patient has different qualities that influence treatment, such as age, weight, and treatment history.

What are the contraindications for using Cefixime?
Cefixime is dangerous to patients allergic to the drug or its active substance, along with several other categories of the population. For example, people who may be at risk when taking Cefixime include pregnant women, patients with a history of colitis, kidney disease, stomach problems, and liver disease, along with patients taking other antibiotics, anticoagulants, and certain vitamins.

What are the adverse effects of Cefixime?
Taking Cefixime may incur side effects in some patients. Mild side effects include headache, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, but more severe ones may also occur, including hives, vaginal infection, difficulty breathing, skin rash, and wheezing. At any sign of serious side effects, patients are advised to seek urgent medical help.
