What is it used for?
Cetirizin treats
• a collection of symptoms in the nose (running nose and nasal congestion) and eyes (itching, redness and tearing), caused e.g. by airborne plant pollens, animal hair or particles of dust (treatment of symptoms of allergic rhinitis [seasonal or perennial] associated with allergic conjunctivitis)
• chronic nettle rash of unknown origin
Children 2-12 years of age Cetirizin treats
• the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (running nose and nasal congestion) and
• chronic nettle rash of unknown origin
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not take Cetirizin
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to cetirizine dihydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of Cetirizin.
- if you suffer from severe kidney disease
Cetirizin is not indicated for children under 2 years of age.
If you take Cetirizin over a long period of time it may lead to an increased risk of tooth decay due to mouth dryness. Oral hygiene is therefore very important. Tell your doctor if you suffer from kidney or liver disease.
Please be careful if you drink alcohol or take medicines which depress the so-called central nervous system (including brain and spinal cord) during use of Cetirizin, as Cetirizin may increase the effects of these substances.
You should avoid using Cetirizin if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Side effects:
Like all medicines, Cetirizin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Some very rare side effects could be serious:
If any of the following happens, stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital:
- allergic reactions such as sudden difficulty in breathing, speaking and swallowing, swelling of the lips, face and neck, extreme dizziness or collapse, itchy, raised skin rash
- yellowing of the skin and eyes, unusual tiredness or fever, dark coloured urine (signs of inflamed liver)
- unusual bruising or bleeding caused by low blood platelets.
Interactions:
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Please be careful if you take medicines which depress the central nervous system during use of Cetirizin, as Cetirizin may increase the effects of these medicines.
