What is Cozaar?
Cozaar is an ARB drug licensed to treat hypertension and diabetic nephropathy. It comes in tablets for oral administration with different strengths of Losartan potassium as active ingredient. The agent works by blocking the action of angiotensin helping blood vessels to relax and thereby improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. Due to this the drug decreases the risk associated with long-term hypertension, including heart attack and stroke. It is approved for treating hypertension in children as old as 6 years of age.

When is Cozaar indicated?
Cozaar is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adult and pediatric patients well as for the treatment of adult diabetic neuropathy. Although it cannot cure these conditions, it can effectively slow down the long-term kidney damage in diabetic patients with a history of hypertension and help control blood pressure. The drug is also prescribed to prevent heart attacks and strokes in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy and prevent kidney problems in type 2 diabetics with hypertension. Sometimes it may be used for treating heart failure.

How to take Cozaar?
Cozaar can be prescribed alone or concomitantly with other antihypertensive agents and can be taken once or twice daily, without regard to food. The starting dose for adult hypertension is 50 mg per day, which can be further adjusted to 25 mg or 100 mg daily according to personal response. Hypertension in children is treated with 0.7 mg per kbw (up to 50 mg total) once daily. Diabetic nephropathy is started at 50 mg once daily with further dosage increase to 100 mg. The drug can be administered together with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents.

When is Cozaar contraindicated?
Cozaar is contraindicated to people allergic to any of its ingredients, to pregnant and breastfeeding women and diabetic patients who concomitantly receive Aliskiren.

What are Cozaar side effects?
Cozaar may provoke dizziness, muscle cramps, back pain, nasal blockage and cough in hypertensive patients. Diabetic patients with renal disease may experience fatigue, anemia, diarrhea, weight gain, hyperkalemia and hypotension. Immediately notify your prescribing physician if you develop severe reactions as unexplained skin rash or blisters, swelling, difficulty breathing and dark colored urine.
