What is Cymbalta?
Cymbalta is a drug widely used in the treatment of certain mental disorders. The drug was developed by Eli Lilly in the 1980’s and patented in 1986, though all of its uses and indications took much longer to get approval from the FDA. Officially, the drug is known as Duloxetine, but it is also sold under the names like Cymbalta, Dimorex, Cymgen, Coperin, Ariclaim, and Yentrieve. This drug works by limiting the reuptake of serotonin in the body and increasing diffusion of dopamine. This very popular drug accounts for billions of dollars in sales every year.

What are the indications for using Cymbalta?
Cymbalta is applied in the treatment of several conditions:
  • Major depressive disorder – a serious mental disorder accompanied by negative and gloomy feelings, loss of pleasure in things that usually bring happiness and satisfaction.
  • Anxiety disorder – a condition suffered by millions, which manifests itself in extreme and often irrational worry about ordinary things and life problems. This worry tends to translate into other health effects like fidgeting, muscle tension, fatigue, and nausea.
Cymbalta is also useful in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy, urinary incontinence, fibromyalgia, and pain from osteoarthritis.

What is the dosage of Cymbalta?
Cymbalta is sold in packages containing 20mg, 30mg, 40mg or 60mg delayed-release capsules, which should be administered orally. When treating depression, the standard daily dose will constitute two capsules of 20mg strength per day, or two stronger doses of 30mg in certain cases. When treating anxiety disorder, the first few days of treatment should include a daily dose of 30mg, but the dose should be increased to 60mg after the body adjusts. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain demand single daily doses of 60mg.

What are the contraindications for using Cymbalta?
Cymbalta should not be taken by anyone allergic to the drug or its components. It is also not suitable for consumption by patients with glaucoma and those taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, blood thinners, CNS acting drugs, NSAIDs, Cimetidine, Enoxacin, Thioridazine, and Ciprofloxacin.

What are the adverse effects of Cymbalta?
Sweating, dizziness, nausea, constipation, tiredness, and dry mouth are the most common side effects. If you experience anything more severe, you should not hesitate to see a doctor as soon as possible.
