What is Evista?
Evista is a SERM that exerts estrogenic effect on bones and anti-estrogenic effect on breast and uterus. The active ingredient of the medication is Raloxifene hydrochloride, which works by binding to estrogen receptors in the mammary gland and by increasing mineral density of bones. Inactive ingredients include crospovidone, carnuba wax, anhydrous lactose, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, hypromellose and polyethylene glycol.
When is Evista indicated?
Evista is indicated to prevent and cure postmenopausal osteoporosis and to minimize the risk of hormone-positive breast cancer in women of climacteric age with or without osteoporosis. The application of the agent in two different conditions treatment is possible due to its estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects it exerts in the body. The medicine is not approved for use in children, women of childbearing potential and men.
How to take Evista?
Evista is usually taken in a dose of one 60 mg tablet once a day regardless of the condition being treated. Concurrent food intake doesn’t affect the absorption of the drug. Pills should be received at one and the same time of the day. The optimum length of treatment must be decided by the doctor. Supplemental intake of vitamin D and calcium may be needed while on the drug.
What are Evista side effects?
Evista-related side effects are usually minor and reversible. One may experience hot flashes, flu-like symptoms, leg cramps, headache, sweating and water retention. To more serious side effects refer unexplained uterine bleeding, rash, swelling and signs of a stroke, i.e. speech and vision changes, numbness in arms or legs and severe headache. Immediately report to physician if you have any side effects while on this drug.
When is Evista contraindicated?
Evista is contraindicated to premenopausal, pregnant and breastfeeding women. The drug is also contraindicated to women with venous thromboembolism, including pulmonary embolism, retinal vein and deep vein thrombosis. Concomitant treatment with systemic estrogens is not recommended. It should be prescribed with caution to patients with hepatic and renal impairment.
