What is Flomax?
Flomax, or Tamsulosin as it is also referred to, is an oral drug that belongs to the group of drugs known as the alpha-adrenergic blockers. Flomax functions by blocking the alpha receptors inside the muscle in the prostate gland. This relaxes the muscles in the bladder neck and in the prostate and helps the urine to flow more freely. Flomax is able to relieve the main BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) symptoms and makes it easier for a man to urinate.
What are the indications for using Flomax?
Flomax is prescribed to men who are suffering from BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). This condition means that the patient has an enlarged prostate which makes it difficult for him to urinate. Flomax is a perfect medication for patients who are suffering from the common symptoms of BPH, such as a weak urine stream, a struggle to begin the flow of urine, and the need to urinate urgently and frequently.
What is the dosage of Flomax?
Flomax is an oral drug that comes in the form of 0.4mg capsules. It is recommended that patients suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia take one 0.4mg capsule a day half an hour after a meal, at the same time each day. If the patient’s condition does not improve after 2 to 4 weeks, the Flomax dosage should be increased to 0.8mg a day. If the patient stops taking Flomax for several days, the therapy should be restarted at 0.4mg a day.
What are the contraindications for using Flomax?
Flomax should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to it or to any of its components, nor should it be consumed with other similar drugs (Doxazosin, Alfuzosin, Prazosin, Terazosin, and Silodosin). Flomax may not be safe for men who have a history of prostate cancer. Those individuals may need to take extra tests and undergo a dose adjustment just to ensure safety while taking Flomax. This drug should never be taken by children.
What are the adverse effects of Flomax?
Flomax has been known to cause an allergic reaction in some of the patients. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat. Some of the mild side effects of Flomax include nausea, headaches, weakness, mild dizziness, and drowsiness. Several of the more serious side effects include chest pain, chills, fever, flu symptoms, body aches, and an erection that causes pain and lasts for longer than 4 hours. Another symptom is a feeling like you might lose consciousness.
