What is Inderal?
Inderal is a selective beta blocker that exerts sympatholytic action on heart and blood vessels. By blocking beta receptors, to which stress hormones attach and cause certain unhealthy reactions, the drug causes reverse effect of stress hormones, decreasing heart rate, blood pressure and cardiac workload. It comes in tablets for oral administration with various strengths of the active ingredient Propranolol hydrochloride.
When is Inderal indicated?
Inderal is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, arterial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, essential tremor, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, hyperhidrosis as well as for controlling tachycardia and pheochromocytoma and preventing migraine and cluster headaches. The drug is also applied in the treatment following a heart attack to improve survival rate and can be prescribed for treating other medical conditions at doctor’s discretion.
How to take Inderal?
Inderal tablets are taken by mouth right before meals. The size and frequency of dose should be individualized based on patient’s response, coexisting illnesses and other medications prescribed concomitantly. Hypertension treatment is typically started at 40 mg twice daily and can be gradually up-titrated to 120 mg – 240 mg a day. The dose range for angina is 80 mg - 320 mg a day. Patients with arterial fibrillation are treated with 10mg – 30 mg every 6 or 8 hours. Essential tremors and migraines are prevented with 40 mg twice daily. The usual dose for hypertrophic subaortic stenosis is 20mg - 40mg every 6 or 8 hours before meals and at bedtime.
What are Inderal side effects?
Inderal may cause anxiety, dry mouth, drowsiness, tiredness, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. These effects are mild and require no medical attention. Serious side effects are less common, but can include moist cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, limb numbness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, abdominal pain, skin rash, itching, swelling or unexplained weight gain. These effects must be immediately reported to the doctor.
When is Inderal contraindicated?
Inderal is contraindicated to patients with bronchial asthma, cardiogenic shock, sinus bradycardia and anyone with known hypersensitivity to Propranolol hydrochloride. It shouldn’t be taken concomitantly with the antipsychotic drug Thioridazine.
