What is it used for?
Lamictal is used for the treatment of epilepsy in adults and children. It is used in addition to other medicines for the treatment of epilepsy. Lamictal is used in partial or generalised seizures including tonic-clonic seizures and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Also it is used as maintenance treatment of Bipolar Disorder to delay the time to occurrence of mood episodes in people aged 18 years or older treated for acute mood episodes with standard therapy.

Contraindications and cautions:
This medication may cause severe or life-threatening skin rash, especially in children and in people who are allergic to other seizure medications.
Do not start or stop using birth control pills or other female hormonal products until you have consulted your doctor. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you experience changes in your menstrual pattern (e.g., break-through bleeding) while taking Lamictal and birth control pills or other female hormonal products.
Before taking Lamictal, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other seizure medications, or if you have:
• kidney disease;
• liver disease; or
• heart disease.
This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Taking this medication during early pregnancy can increase the risk of the baby being born with cleft lip or cleft palate. Lamictal can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor.

Side effects:
Most people who take Lamictal tolerate it well. Common side effects with Lamictal include dizziness, headache, blurred or double vision, lack of coordination, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and rash.
Although most patients who develop rash while receiving Lamictal have mild to moderate symptoms, some individuals may develop a serious skin reaction that requires hospitalization. These serious skin reactions are most likely to happen within the first 8 weeks of treatment with Lamictal. Serious skin reactions occur more often in children than in adults.
If you develop any side effects or symptoms you are concerned about or need more information, call your doctor.

Interactions:
Birth control pills can make Lamictal less effective, resulting in increased seizures. Tell your doctor if you start or stop using birth control pills while you are taking Lamictal. Before taking Lamictal, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
• hormonal forms of birth control (pills, injections, implants, or skin patches);
• carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol);
• divalproex (Depakote);
• oxcarbazepine (Trileptal);
• phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton);
• primidone (Mysoline);
• phenytoin (Dilantin);
• rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane); or
• valproic acid (Depakene).
Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
