What is Levaquin?
Levaquin, or levofloxacin as it is also known, is an oral drug that fights bacteria in the body. It belongs to the quinolone group of antibiotics. This antibiotic functions by preventing the growth of bacteria by hindering its reproduction and by preventing the repair of DNA, its genetic material. Levaquin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. However, it cannot kill viruses, therefore it cannot combat diseases such as the flu and common cold.

What are the indications for using Levaquin?
Levaquin is prescribed to patients suffering from bacterial infections of the kidneys, skin, prostate, sinuses, or bladder. It is also effective in treating bacterial infections that cause pneumonia and bronchitis. Lavaquin can be prescribed to individuals who have been exposed to anthrax.

What is the dosage of Levaquin?
Levaquin comes in the form of 250, 500, and 750mg tablets and in a 25ml oral solution. The exact dosage should be determined by a medical practitioner in accordance with the type of bacterial infection. The typical dosage is 250-750mg, to be taken once a day for anywhere from 3 to 14 days. Anthrax patients need to take 500mg a day for 60 day straight. It is crucial that Levaquin be taken at least 2 hours before or after any mineral supplement that contains calcium, zinc, iron, or magnesium. These minerals can prevent Levaquin from getting absorbed into the blood.

What are the contraindications for using Levaquin?
Levaquin should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to it, to its components, or to other fluoroquinolones. It is also contraindicated to individuals with muscle disorders, such as myasthenia gravis. Levaquin may be unsafe for patients with a heart rhythm disorder, arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, or a history of Long QT syndrome. It may not be the appropriate medication for individuals suffering from nerve disorders, brain tumors, bone problems, epilepsy, or for those with a low level of potassium in the blood. It should be avoided by people, who are using a blood thinner.

What are the adverse effects of Levaquin?
Levaquin has been known to cause some side effects, the most common of which is diarrhea. The rare but possible side effects include severe abdominal or stomach pain, blisters, agitation, confusion, watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, pain or swelling in the legs, hands, or shoulders, redness of the skin, and itching. These side effects require immediate medical attention.
