What is Maxalt?
Maxalt is a drug commonly used to treat migraines. It was developed by the Merck pharmaceutical company and received approval by the USA’s main drug regulation body – the Food and Drug Administration, in 1998. Maxalt is officially known as Rizatriptan and is also sold under the trade names Rizalt, and Rizaliv. This very popular drug is sold in countries all over the world, including Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, the US, and many European countries. Maxalt belongs to the class of drugs known as triptans and functions by producing an agonist effect on serotonin receptors in the brain. This causes a decrease in peptide levels and brings subsequent relief from a migraine.

What are the indications for using Maxalt?
Maxalt is prescribed to treat a migraine. A migraine is a disease that causes moderate and severe headaches that last from several hours to several days. Other symptoms of this condition include light sensitivity, nausea, smell and sound sensitivity, and vomiting. There are several known causes of migraines. In two-thirds of cases, migraines are passed on genetically, but hormonal disbalance also accounts for many cases of a migraine. It is estimated that nearly one-fifth of the world’s population experience this condition at a point in their lives. Unapproved and off-label uses for the drug include treatment of cluster headaches and altitude sickness.

What is the dosage of Maxalt?
Maxalt is sold in the form of 5 mg or 10 mg tablets, which should be administered orally. For adults, the dosage varies from 5-10 mg per day and should be determined by the severity of a migraine and of its side effects. For children, the standard dose is 5 mg, though it should be changed to 10 mg if the child weighs more than 88 lbs.

What are the contraindications for using Maxalt?
Maxalt is contraindicated for patients allergic to the drug or other triptans, along with patients suffering from coronary artery disease. Other risk factors include hypertension, liver disease, seizure, and blood circulation problems. Maxalt should not be taken together with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and is known to interact with serotonin-increasing drugs and ergotamine medication.

What are the adverse effects of Maxalt?
The most common side effects include dizziness, flushing, tingling, weakness, and numbness, though more severe effects may also occur in rare cases. If you experience them, see a doctor immediately.
