What is Microzide?
Microzide is a thiazide diuretic intended for the management of hypertension and water retention. It contains Hydrochlorothiazide as active ingredient that works by increasing the amount of water and salt removed from the body and decreasing the blood volume. The drug exerts kaliuretic action and can be prescribed to those patients in whom the development of hyperkalemia can’t be risked, including patients receiving ACE inhibitors. It comes in solid dosage form and is approved for use in adults only.

When is Microzide indicated?
Microzide is indicated for the treatment of hypertension as a sole therapeutic agent or together with other antihypertensive drugs such as Losartan. It is also prescribed to treat symptomatic edema caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, kidney disease, diabetes insipidus, nephrotic syndrome and corticosteroid medications, where it can improve symptoms as shortness of breath and swelling of ankles and feet. The drug can also be used to prevent kidney stones formation in people with high levels of calcium in the urine.

How to take Microzide?
Microzide is administered orally, usually once daily, without regard to food. The initial adult dose is one pill once daily taken alone or concomitantly with other antihypertensive drugs. Then the dosage can be decreased or increased depending on tolerability and personal response to therapy. The total daily dose shouldn’t exceed 50 mg. It is recommended to avoid taking the drug within 4 hours before going to bed in order not to get up to urinate.

When is Microzide contraindicated?
Microzide mustn’t be used in people with anuria and those hypersensitive to Hydrochlorothiazide or other sulfonamide derived medications. When received together with barbiturates, alcohol or narcotics, orthostatic hypotension may occur. The drug can be toxic to fetus.

What are Microzide side effects?
Microzide side effects are usually dose related. As the body adjusts to the drug there can manifest dizziness, upset stomach and headaches. Address your physician if these side effects persist. Serious side effects are rare, though they may include allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, decreased urination, dehydration and loss of minerals, unusual thirst or dry mouth. Discontinue the drug if you develop blurred vision, photosensitivity or eye pain.
