What is Pepcid?
Pepcid is an oral medication for conditions related to stomach, esophagus and intestines. It comes in the form of tablets, which contain Famotidine as active ingredient. It is an H2 blocker that reduces acid production in the stomach by inhibiting the action of histamine on stomach parietal cells. It is a fast working remedy for occasional heartburn relief as well as a treatment for more serious conditions caused by excessive acid production. The medication is available in various strengths suited for different conditions being treated.

When is Pepcid indicated?
Pepcid is indicated for the treatment of active duodenal ulcers, benign gastric ulcers, GERD and pathological hypersecretory conditions, such as multiple endocrine adenomas, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and others. It is also prescribed to prevent duodenal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. The medicine can be used for prevention and managing heartburn as well as other symptoms caused by acid indigestion that typically happens after meals. The drug is approved for GERD treatment in children and infants and can be used to treat ulcers in children over 1 year of age.

How to take Pepcid?
Pepcid is administered orally, once or twice daily. If the drug is prescribed once daily, it is typically taken at bedtime. The adult dose for duodenal and gastric ulcers is 40 mg q24h for 4-8 weeks. GERD is treated with 20 mg q12h for 6 weeks. Pathological hypersecretory conditions are treated with 20 mg q6h up to 160 mg as long as clinically indicated. Children are given 0.5 mg per kg a day once or twice daily with maximum daily dose of 40 mg.

What are Pepcid side effects?
Pepcid is usually well tolerated and rarely spurs side effects. Side effects that occur in less than 1% of patients are headache, dizziness, diarrhea and constipation. These effects are minor and usually require no treatment. In very rare cases the drug can provoke arrhythmia, seizures, confusion or hallucinations, allergic reaction, signs of liver problems, musculoskeletal pain, muscle cramps, fatigue or general weakness.

When is Pepcid contraindicated?
Pepcid is contraindicated to people hypersensitive to any of the drug components as well as to anyone with a previous history of allergic reactions to other H2 blockers. Patients with renal insufficiency may require lower doses or longer intervals between doses.
