What is Propecia?
Propecia is a drug used to treat several different health problems, mostly in men. Though it was developed relatively recently, Propecia has garnered much attention both in the medical world and in media. Propecia (like Proscar) is but one name of the drug Finasteride, which is sold both under the Merck brand and in the form of generics. Like most innovative drugs, Propecia originated from a daring idea. In 1975, a researcher at the Merck pharmaceutical company saw a connection between a genetic defect and certain hormones, deciding to investigate it. Merck conducted research on the subject for over ten years until the drug was completed and approved by the FDA in 1992. In 1997, the FDA repeatedly approved the drug, although for the treatment of an additional health condition – hair loss. Propecia belongs to a class of medicines known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It functions by inhibiting a certain enzyme, which in turn blocks the production of dihydrotestosterone. This action reduces the size of the prostate and affects the scalp.

What are the indications for using Propecia?
Propecia is officially recommended for the treatment of several male health problems. The first of them is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition can be simply described as an enlarged prostate. BPH affects millions of men all over the world and causes many bladder-related problems.

Propecia is also recommended for the treatment of male pattern baldness. This is a hair loss that often affects aging men and some women, too. Hair loss is an unpleasant process that cannot be fully reversed, yet can be significantly inhibited and counteracted.

Sometimes, Propecia has been used to facilitate hormone replacement therapy or to mask steroid use, though neither of these uses is approved or recommended by professionals.

What is the dosage of Propecia?
Propecia is typically supplied in the form of 1mg tablets, which should be administered orally, with or without food. The recommended daily dose is one pill, though sometimes, individual doses are better determined by physicians.

What are the contraindications for using Propecia?
Propecia should not be taken by children and women. Pregnant women are especially at risk, as Propecia may cause some birth defects. Furthermore, it is not suitable for consumption by anyone allergic to its active ingredient.

What are the adverse effects of Propecia?
Seek emergency medical help when you notice signs of an allergic reaction including hives, swelling of your face, tongue, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Some of the reversible adverse effects include impotence, trouble having an orgasm, loss of interest in sex, abnormal ejaculation, swelling of hands and feet, dizziness, weakness, headache, runny nose, or skin rash.
