What is Seroquel?
Seroquel is a monograph drug used to treat several kinds of mental disorders. It was developed by the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company in the early 1990’s and approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1997. Initially, it was only approved for treating bipolar mania and schizophrenia, but its indications were expanded to include major depression disorder in 2009. Seroquel is officially known as Quetiapine and belongs to a category of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics. It works by balancing the number of natural chemicals known as neurotransmitters in the brain.

What are the indications for using Seroquel?
Seroquel can be used in the treatment of several conditions. The first that should be mentioned is schizophrenia. This mental disorder is characterized by detachment from reality and abnormal social behavior. Another common indication for Seroquel is in the treatment of bipolar disorder. This condition is characterized by sudden and frequent mood swings. One of the newer indications for Seroquel is major depressive disorder, a common mental health problem characterized by constant low mood and little to no interest in everyday matters.

What is the dosage of Seroquel?
Seroquel is sold in the form of small tablets of strengths varying from 25 mg to 400 mg. Dosage should vary based on the condition being treated and a doctor’s recommendation. The standard dosage for schizophrenia treatment in adults is 150-750 mg per day while the standard dose for major depressive disorder is 300 mg per day, and the dose for bipolar disorder will be between 400 and 800 mg. Adolescents traditionally receive smaller doses.

What are the contraindications for using Seroquel?
Seroquel should not be administered to patients allergic to the drug or its active substance. Other patients whose health may be at risk include those suffering from eye cataracts, thyroid problems, low blood cell count, intestinal blockage, liver disease, and seizure disorder. Seroquel is known to interact with azole antifungals, seizure medication, drugs that affect heart rhythm, rifamycins and several more.

What are the adverse effects of Seroquel?
Common side effects of Seroquel include drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, high blood pressure, and fatigue. Rarer side effects include vomiting, back pain, tremor, insomnia, constipation and nasal congestion. The full list of possible effects can be found on the drug manufacturer’s website.
