What is it used for?
Topamax capsules are used to treat various types of epilepsy. It may be used on their own to treat adults and children aged 6 years and over.
They can also be used in combination with other anti-epileptic medicines in both adults and children aged 2 years and over.
Topamax capsules are also used to prevent frequently recurring migraine headaches in adults and children over 16 years old. Treatment must be started under specialist care and continued under the supervision of a specialist. Topamax Sprinkle Capsules are not intended to treat an individual attack.
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not take these capsules if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the product.
You should tell your doctor if you
• are pregnant or think you might be pregnant or if you intend to become pregnant. Your doctor will then discuss with you if you should continue to take Topamax capsules.
• are breast feeding. Your doctor may ask you to stop breast feeding as Topamax capsules may reach your baby through your milk.
• have or have had kidney stones or kidney disease.
Topamax should not usually be given to children under 2 years old.
Side effects:
Topamax may cause the following side effects which can be serious :
• metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is a condition that happens when there is too much acid in your blood.
• eye problems. Serious eye problems include:
• a sudden decrease in vision (acute myopia) with or without eye pain and
• a blockage of fluid in the eye causing increased pressure in the eye (secondary angle closure glaucoma).
Call your healthcare professional right away if you have a loss in vision or get eye pain.
• decreased sweating (oligohidrosis) and increased body temperature (fever).
• effects on thinking and alertness.
• dizziness or loss of muscle coordination in patients who take Topamax alone or with other seizure medicines.
high blood ammonia levels and effects on mental activities. This has happened when Topamax has been used with a medicine called valproic acid (DEPAKENE® and DEPAKOTE®).
• kidney stones. Drink plenty of fluids when taking Topamax to decrease your chances of getting kidney stones.
• tingling of the arms and legs (paresthesia) is a common side effect of TOPAMAX.
Other side effects with Topamax include loss of appetite, nausea, a change in the way foods taste, diarrhea, weight loss, nervousness, aggression, upper respiratory tract infection.
Interactions:
Please tell your doctor about all medicines you are using, including those you bought without a prescription and any other remedies or dietary supplements such as vitamins.
It is especially important that your doctor knows if you are taking digoxin, hydrochlorothiazide, metformin, pioglitazone, contraceptive pills, amitriptyline, haloperidol, propranolol or other anti-epileptic drugs, such as phenytoin or carbamazepine.
