What is Zoloft?
Zoloft is an antidepressant drug of the SSRI class. It contains Sertraline hydrochloride as active ingredient and is intended for oral administration. The drug works by controlling the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. By blocking its reuptake, the drug allows serotonin to better activate the receptors on the nerve cells. Zoloft is indicated for the treatment of various psychiatric conditions and namely, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder and severe premenstrual dysphoric disorder. The drug is also licensed to treat depression in elderly population and OCD in children over the age of 6 and adolescents. Sometimes it can be prescribed for treating premature ejaculation.
How to take Zoloft?
Zoloft adult dose for most illnesses is 50 mg once daily. However the starting dose for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia is 25 mg once daily, which should be up-titrated in a week to 50 mg once daily. Patients who do not respond to the 50 mg dose may be administered up to 200 mg. Children aged 6-12 are usually treated with 25 mg dose q24h and adolescents aged 13-17 are given 50 mg q24h. Pills can be taken without regard to food, either in the morning or in the evening. It typically takes 4 to 6 months before significant changes in mood can be observed. Gradual withdrawal is required.
What are Zoloft side effects?
Zoloft most common side effects include: insomnia, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, indigestion, diarrhea, fatigue and tremor. Less common effects include increased sweating, headache, hot flashes, nervousness, unusual weight loss, vision changes, abdominal pain, muscle cramps and ejaculation delay. Children may also develop hyperactivity, urinary incontinence, aggressiveness, sinus infection and bloody nose.
When is Zoloft contraindicated?
Zoloft is contraindicated to patients hypersensitive to Sertraline. It mustn’t be used concomitantly with Pimozide. The use of MAOIs within 2 weeks of stopping Zoloft and the use of Zoloft within 2 weeks of stopping MAOIs is contraindicated as well.
